For Such A Time As This

Pray. Fast. Act.

Dear John ,

The Presiding Bishops of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Episcopal Church invite us to a season of prayer, fasting and advocacy.

Pray and fast: The season begins with a three-day fast starting this Sunday, May 21st, which is the Global Day of Prayer to End Famine, an initiative of the World Council of Churches and the All Africa Conference of Churches to mobilize Christians to respond to people suffering from food and water shortages.

The season will continue with a fast day on the 21st of each month through December 2018, when the 115th Congress will conclude. The 21st of each month is significant, because by that date, the majority of food assistance benefits for that month will have run out. This means that the last week of the month is usually the hungriest week in America.

Act: Bishop Elizabeth Eaton and Bishop Michael Curry extended this call out of concern for proposed deep cuts to programs that are vital to hungry people struggling with poverty. They summon our churches to practices of spiritual devotion that undergird a discipline of public witness on behalf of the neighbor.

Join The Episcopal Public Policy Network to receive monthly messages to support your prayer, fasting and advocacy. We'll remind you to fast and provide calls to action supported by educational resources.

Visit the #ForSuchATime page on the Office of Government Relations website for more information on fasting practices and advocacy.

Use #ForSuchATime on social media to tell us how you're observing the fast and to encourage others to join the call.

Join us for such a time as this, and pray, fast, and act.
